The French Law of 11 March 1957, pursuant to paragraphs 2 and 3 of Article 41, only authorises on the one hand "copies or reproductions strictly reserved for the private use of the copier and not for collective purposes" and, on the other, analyses and short quotations for purposes of example and illustration ("any representation or integral, or partial reproduction, made without the author’s, or his assignees’, consent is illicit" – paragraph 1, Article 40).
